Button Trees

Have you heard of Pinterest?  If not you should check it out.  My sister recently stumbled upon an awesome project called a Button Tree.  They are so much fun to make.  At first I was hesitant to start this project because my artistic abilities are limited to stick people and smiley faces.  However, I am so glad that I made one because they are quite simple.  The hardest thing about them is making the first mark on the canvas.

Supplies Needed:
  1. 8x10 white canvas
  2. Assorted buttons
  3. Acrylic paint
  4. Paint brushes
  5. Glue
  6. Pencil (optional)
  7. Small wooden letter
If you are totally creative and just want to have fun with it, I would suggest just painting the tree on. If you require a little more control, I would draw it with a pencil and erase any mistakes or changes. These are not only fun but the can make for some awesome baby gifts. If you shop for deals on the canvas you can create a button tree for less than $7.00.  I bought the letter "M" unpainted for $1.00 and then painted it myself.  So if you are feeling creative and want to make something adorable, make a button tree!  Use non-toxic glue and make it a family affair!

Our Day Trip to the Beach

Last weekend my mom, sister, and I decided to take a trip to the beach.  We went to visit some family from out of town who were camping nearby.  We took my daughter, "M" and my nephew.  Papa and Daddy stayed at home.  Our trip only lasted a few hours but it was so much fun.

The kids played in the sand and splashed in the water. My nephew and I even went out on a paddle boat.  M refused to ride  because she is going through a non-adventurous phase right now. On our way home from the beach we stopped at a beautiful park full of little bridges so we could get some pictures.  The kids had such a good time running up and down the bridges.   These are the types of outings we love!  I would love to hear what fun day trips you and your family take!

Toss Out The Junk Food...

We all know that eating healthy is very important but not always easy.  And getting kids to eat healthy is another story.  Kids can be very picky eaters, so with my daughter I try to mix it up.  I do not like giving her just cheese, or just crackers.  Instead I give her a variety of different flavors.  Today she had some grapes, cheese, and crackers.

Sometimes she has a banana and a piece of toast covered with peanut butter.  I usually like to have plenty of choices for M to choose from.  I make sure to stock up on different fruits, cheeses, and crackers.  What are some of your healthy snack suggestions.

Baby Signing Time DVD Review

Since communication is the key to any relationship, Sign Language an essential skill to acquire. Early on, babies are ready and willing to express themselves. Not knowing how to communicate they rely on you to figure it out. Signing can become the bridge between the both of you.  Signing can also help build your baby’s self esteem. Knowing how to sign for their needs and seeing you deliver on those needs builds trust.  Signing means less frustration which equals fewer tantrums.

When my daughter turned one we decided to purchase a baby sign language video.  We found the Signing Time website.  They have a nice variety of signing DVDs for babies, toddlers, and young children.  They also have a special Potty Learning Collection.
The series features host Rachel Coleman, along with animated Baby Alex, Baby Leah, and Baby Hopkins. The DVD from the collection we chose was It's Baby Signing Time Vol. 1.  My daughter cannot get enough of it.  She watches it so much that it even helped improve her speech. The clever songs and animation are very enjoyable and easily hold your attention.  They even have real signing babies to make it easy and fun.

Some of the ASL signs taught on this DVD include: Eat, Drink, Cracker, Water, Milk, Banana, Finished, Mom, Grandma, Dad, Grandpa, Potty, More, Bird, Fish, Cat, Dog, Frog, Hurt, & Where.

If you pay close attention, you will also see and learn the signs for: Baby, Signing, Time, Love, Talent, Dreams, I Love You, & Special.

This was such an awesome DVD that my daughter asks to watch it all the time.  She will come up to me and sign "baby signing time".  This video has not only taught her to sign but it has help her speech.  We are most definitely planning on purchasing the entire series.

Buy it: Its Baby Signing Time Vol. 1 for $19.95

Surviving as a One Car Family

Being a stay at home Mom is where I am meant to be and I wouldn't change it for the world. But it definitely comes with its share of disadvantages. We have been a one car family for for quite some time now and let me tell you it has not been easy. From scheduling appointments to grocery shopping, everything takes some serious planning. Here's how we do it:

Appointments and Shopping:
My husband usually gets his schedule 3 weeks in advance. As soon as he gets it, I sit down and make any appointments that we may need. I find his first day off and make that our grocery shopping day. When making the grocery list I make sure to buy enough meals to last a few days past his schedule. I also plan for a mid-schedule shopping trip for things like milk, bread, and produce.

Schedule Family Outings:
With my husbands schedule, most days our daughter only gets to see him for a few minutes before he leaves for work. He usually comes home after she has already gone to sleep. Because of this I like to schedule at least two days of family fun. Whether its a picnic in the park, blowing bubbles in the yard, or trip to the local zoo. That way Daddy gets to enjoy seeing his daughter play and explore.

Schedule Mommy ( & Daughter) Outings:
Being stuck in a house for days without any adult interaction can be very stressful. I also know that hubby needs to relax and unwind on some of his days off. That being said, I make sure to schedule things that my daughter and I like to do. "M" loves the library, so I make sure to plan a trip there, while I have the car. And for me...sometimes, I just like to drive to my moms and spend time with other adults.

Have a Plan for "Emergency" Trips:
I know that I can always count on family if I am in a bind and really need to get somewhere. But if for some reason they are unavailable to help and I am having a true emergency, I have no problem running to a neighbor and asking for help. Always have a car seat and get to know your neighbors.

So being a one car family isn't always fun, but with some planning it is totally doable.
