When we first came across the Howard B.
Wigglebottom books (on a blog much like my own), I just knew that M had
to have them. The main character,
Howard B. Wigglebottom is a cute little rabbit that is faced with difficult
childhood situations and through them learns valuable life lessons. He learns about telling the truth, bullying,
belonging, the importance of listening, and much more. Each book contains a specific topic that
many children face in everyday life.
Author
and CEO of the We Do Listen Foundation, Howard Binkow and illustrator Susan F. Corneilson have created a wonderful
series! Their 10 educator endorsed
books (and 1 in the works) are suggested for ages 3-8 but they are a joy to
read even as an adult. My daughter is
only 2 and absolutely adores Howard.
Her first We Do Listen Book was Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns
to Listen and it honestly helped her better understand what it means to listen.
I not only recommend this book for home use but I think it would be a great addition to any classroom. With the last two pages, Suggestions for Lessons and Reflections, parents and teachers can start a very productive dialogue. This book opens
the door to great discussions about being a part of a team, self-esteem and
being liked. It helps children
understand not everyone learns the same and not to judge a “book” by its cover.
We Do Listen has animated versions of their books, songs, and games on their website all free of charge!! Their site also has free lesson plan ideas and activities to go along with each book. This website is an excellent resource for both parents and children. Click here to see for yourself.
Howard Binkow is even available for free Skype author school visits!
What is the We Do Listen Foundation?
“The We Do Listen Foundation is a 501(c)(3) Non Profit
Corporation. Its intention is to enable children to enjoy inner peace and
communicate in a more effective way.
We create entertaining, educational books, animated books,
games and songs to help young children learn how to listen, feel good about
themselves and deal with bullies and violence. Children who learn these skills
will grow up better informed to resolve conflicts and will be empowered to
change the world.
We are a group of writers, artists, designers, educators,
therapists, parents and teachers. Most of us volunteer our time. We share a
vision of a kinder world with more harmony and peace and a better life for
everyone to enjoy.” –wedolisten.org
